Helping people collect rainwater

Rain Harvesting™ makes it simple to get the most from every drop. Whether you're setting up your first system or improving an existing one, our products, free design tools, and expert guidance are here to help your rainwater system work as well as it possibly can.

Why collect rainwater?

Rainwater harvesting works for everyone, from suburban homes to rural properties, in high or low rainfall areas. Here are some of the most common reasons people start collecting.

Reducing dependence on mains water
Saving money or qualifying for rebates
Improved drought resilience
A healthier garden
Bushfire preparedness
Lowering your ecological footprint
Better stormwater management
Protecting your building
Increased self-sufficiency
Step 1

Understand your rainwater needs

Work out how much water you need, how you'll use it, and what your local rainfall looks like. Getting this right from the start means a system designed for your property.

Step 2

Store your rainwater

Choose the right tank for your property. Size, material, and location all affect how much water you collect and how well your system performs over time.

Step 3

Assess your rainwater collection area

Your roof is your catchment. Check surface materials, overhanging trees, and gutters for anything that could affect water quality before it reaches your tank.

Step 4

Filter leaves and debris

Leaves, twigs, and debris are the first source of contamination. A quality rain head or leaf filter keeps them out of your system from the very first drop.

Step 5

Divert the first flush of rainwater

The first water off your roof carries the most contaminants. A first flush diverter automatically redirects this away from your tank, so only cleaner water is stored.

Step 6

Secure your rainwater system

Keep animals, insects, and sunlight out with tank screens and insect-proof screens. An air gap prevents stormwater and groundwater backflow into your tank.

Step 7

Decide on a pump or gravity-fed system

How you draw water from your tank matters. Talk to a specialist to find the right setup for your property, whether that's a pump, gravity feed, or a combination of both.

Step 8

Manage standing water

Stagnant water breeds problems. Regularly drain wet systems to prevent sediment build-up, and use a solar shield to block sunlight and stop algae growth in your tank.

Step 9

Final stage rainwater filtration

Decide how much filtration your water needs based on how you'll use it. Remove tannins and colour for laundry, and filter thoroughly if you're using rainwater for drinking.

Step 10

Optimise your overflow

Make sure your overflow is plumbed into a stormwater main with an air gap. Your outlet should match your inlet to keep the system balanced and working efficiently.

Step 11

Monitor your water level

Keep track of your tank levels, inflows, and outflows over time. Good data helps you understand your system's performance and plan ahead for dry periods.

Step 12

Care for your system

Check regularly for leaks, pest entry points, and contaminant build-up. Clean your system with a pressure cleaner and upgrade components as needed.
